Emory / Biographical Summary
Dr. Owens received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Duke University in 1990. He joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke for 18 months prior to being recruited to Emory University in December 1991. He is a member of both the Molecular & Systems Pharmacology and Neuroscience training programs in the graduate school at Emory University. Dr. Owens has received a number of scientific awards and honors including 1st prize at the National Student Research Forum, a Mead-Johnson award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Rafaelsen Scholar award form the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP). He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. His research interests center upon the long-term molecular and cellular mechanisms of antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and antipsychotic drugs, particularly as they relate to neuropeptide transmitter systems. He is a regular reviewer for the journals: Neuropsychopharmacology, Biological Psychiatry, the American Journal of Psychiatry, the Journal of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, Molecular Pharmacology, Endocrinology, and the Journal of Neuroscience. Dr. Owens has published over 150 research articles and reviews.
