Carla Hernandez, B.S. |
Carla hernandez was born in Cleveland, OH. She entered the Ohio State Univeristy in 2000
majoring in zoology. Her interest in primates began the summer of 2001 working in the
African animal department of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. She spent two summers there
learning a lot about gorillas, bonobos, mandrills, drills, and colobus monkeys. She
started focusing her studies on primates and in the summer of 2003 took a research
internship with the OSU Chimp Center. She did an experiment with the chimps that looked
at their tool-use abilities. Not having much writing, research or any statistical
experience at the time the research was never published, but still hopes it could be.
After receiveing her BS in zoology in 2004 she took another internship with Fossil Rim
WIldlife Center in Texas. She learned even more about animals and captive care. After
completing the internship she got her first full-time job working with a primate research
and supply company in South Carolina. She began as a census technician on an island off
the coast of South carolina with a free-ranging colony of about 3000 rhesus macaques.
She learned about social, community, aggressive behaviors in the rhesus. She was soon
promoted to working on the mainland facility coordinating the new world primates as well
as enrichment and social housing of the colonies many other primate species. That
experience was invaluable, showing all the ins and outs of the research primates and how
to keep them happy and healthy in large captive primate research setting. She took a
position as a Research Specialist with Emory University in 2006. She has obtained many
new skills here and improved on some old ones pertaining to handling and training rhesus
macaques and countless other areas. She helps out in the lab working with both human and
monkey samples to isolate plasma, white blood cells, and measure cortisol. She currently
takes classes at Emory to further her knowledge and career with animals and research. |
