Dr. Cowles is originally from Florida, born in Miami and raised in Keystone Heights. She received her undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida and a master of science in bioengineering from Clemson University. Prior to attending medical school, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Cowles worked in industry for four years as a manufacturing and design engineer for Energizer Power Systems and Fluor Daniel. It was during this time that she cultivated an interest in finite element analysis and three-dimensional modeling, which ultimately lead to her current involvement in brain imaging and analysis.

Dr. Cowles completed her residency in psychiatry at Emory University and is currently continuing her work at Emory as a psychiatric research fellow in the Mind-Body Program. Her research interests include mood disorders in the medically ill with a focus on brain imaging utilizing functional MRI and PET studies.
