Treatment Resistant Depression Study
The Mind Body Program, in the Emory University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is conducting a clinical research study to assess the effectiveness of a medication in patients with treatment resistant depression. In this study, patients will receive either infliximab (Remicade®) or placebo (normal saline) infusions for difficult to treat depression. Infliximab (Remicade®) is FDA approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease but has not been studied in the treatment of depression.
To qualify for this study you must:
- Be between 25-60 years old
- Have been diagnosed with major depression and be currently depressed
- Have been unsuccessfully treated with antidepressant medications
- Be medically healthy
You will not qualify if you:
- Have been treated with infliximab (Remicade®), etanercept or adalimimub
- Have a history of tuberculosis or an autoimmune disorder
- Are pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy in the next year
What will be expected of you if you participate?
- Provide informed consent
- Discuss psychiatric and medical history
- Have physical exams, ECG, chest x-ray, TB tests and blood draws at no expense to you
- Visit Emory University 9 times over 12 weeks. Two study visits include optional overnight stays in the Emory Hospital research unit
Compensation:
Participants will be compensated for time and travel expenses. Tokens will be provided for visitor parking.
