Our
Mission
The
Emory University Resident Psychopharmacology Training Clinic (RPTC)
was developed in 2001 in an effort to deliver affordable, high quality
medication management services for patients struggling with mental
health illness, while providing a valuable educational experience
for psychiatry residents at Emory University. Clinic services are
offered by 3rd year residents under the close supervision of Emory
University faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Sciences.
Clinic
Services
Patients
appropriate for referral include those who might benefit from a
psychopharmacology (medication) consultation, or who require ongoing
medication management. The primary focus of the RPTC is medication
treatment for patients and professional training for our psychiatry
residents in a collaborative model of care involving other professional
therapists. We expect patients who are currently in psychotherapy
to maintain contact with their primary therapists after enrolling
in the RPTC. Furthermore, residents are expected to have continuing
contact with treating therapists, as clinically appropriate. Although
it is not necessary that a patient have a therapist in order to
receive an evaluation or treatment in the Clinic, patients may be
referred from the RPTC to a psychotherapist for primary or adjunctive
treatment.
Due
to limited resources, we do not perform drug rehabilitation or detoxification
services. In addition, some patients require a multi-disciplinary
treatment team, including multiple providers for their care. This
type of integrated treatment is not available at the RPTC. Furthermore,
the Clinic does not offer intensive psychotherapy. Please note that
if medications are recommended, patient participants will need to
have prescriptions filled at a pharmacy. We cannot provide medications
for free; however, we will help qualified individuals apply for
drug assistance programs to obtain medications for free or at a
reduced cost.
Clinic
Fees
In an effort
to provide excellent psychiatric services for patients and a valuable
training experience for our physicians, Clinic fees are kept to
a minimum. The initial evaluation currently costs $50 and follow-up
visits range from $25 to $50 based on a sliding scale calculated
using household income. These fees are subject to change. In general,
patients may not use their medical insurance for reimbursement of
physician services; however, medications may be covered by their
insurance carrier.
