Clinical experiences
Fellows will spend four months at each of Emory’s three teaching medical centers (Emory
University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, and the Atlanta VA Medical Center) that will include training in psychiatric consultation and management of medical and surgical inpatients and outpatients. Each medical center offers opportunities to work with its special populations of patients (e.g. those patients with transplantation-related disorders at Emory University Hospital; HIV/AIDS patients at Grady; and patients with PTSD at the VA). Opportunities and responsibilities will include direct in- and outpatient care.

Didactic experiences
There are at least weekly seminars and teaching conferences covering the full range of psychosomatic medicine topics throughout the year at the 3 sites. In addition there are daily teaching rounds where the emphasis is on diagnostic and interviewing skills, increasing knowledge, case presentations, short-term therapy, optimizing collegial relationships with other health providers, and professionalism. Considerable individual supervision is provided. The other teaching conferences, grand rounds, etc., of the Emory psychiatry department are open to fellows.

Research
The Emory fellowship is academically oriented, and the program strives to create new knowledge in psychosomatic medicine. Fellows will participate in ongoing research projects and are encouraged to develop their own.

Teaching
In addition to the training of fellows, the program's mission includes fostering the psychosomatic medicine education of non-psychiatric, as well as psychiatric, residents and medical students. Fellows participate significantly in this pedagogical enterprise.

Staff
The staff currently consists of psychosomatic medicine psychiatrists at Emory and two additional full-time psychosomatic medicine psychiatrists at the Grady and VA sites respectively who implement and supervise the training. Three of these four psychiatrists (including the program director) are board-certified in psychosomatic medicine. Additional staff includes psychiatrists who work with medically ill patients and are involved in the various clinical, didactic, and research experiences of the program.

Salary and fringe benefits
The anticipated annual salary for 2009-2010 is
$53,007. Fellows receive the standard benefit package associated with being a house officer at Emory.

Applicants must have completed a psychiatric residency prior to beginning the fellowship (PGY 5 and above) and be qualified to obtain a Georgia medical license.

From a 2009 graduate:

"The Emory Psychosomatic Medicine program is an accredited fellowship abounding with new energy and enthusiastic leadership that provides an excellent experience for the budding consultation-liaison psychiatrist. I was exposed to a diverse and unique spectrum of clinical experiences. I also had the opportunity to participate in research, journal clubs, inter-disciplinary case conferences, and the invaluable "How To Teach" seminar.  Being a learner-oriented program, the highly accomplished and highly motivated faculty ensured I was supported in my intellectual pursuits, generated enthusiasm for learning and teaching, and helped me to develop new clinical skills and refine existing ones.  All of this occurred amidst an environment of incredible support, both professionally and personally, that not only began before I started the program, but also continues after I have graduated."
