Resident Psychopharmacology Training Clinic

Our Mission

The Emory University Resident Psychopharmacology Training Clinic (RPTC) was developed in 2001 in an effort to deliver affordable, high quality medication management services for patients struggling with mental health illness, while providing a valuable educational experience for psychiatry residents at Emory University. Clinic services are offered by 3rd year residents under the close supervision of Emory University faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Clinic Services

Patients appropriate for referral include those who might benefit from a psychiatric evaluation, psychopharmacology (medication) consultation, or who require ongoing medication management. The focus of the RPTC is high quality psychiatric treatment for patients and professional training for our psychiatry residents in a collaborative model. Resident physicians integrate the use of symptom-based scales and psychosocial function scales to measure patients’ initial levels of function and to gauge improvement. We expect patients who are currently in psychotherapy to maintain contact with their primary therapists after enrolling in the RPTC and residents are expected to have continuing contact with treating therapists, as clinically appropriate. Although it is not necessary that a patient have a therapist in order to receive an evaluation or treatment in the Clinic, patients may be referred from the RPTC to a psychotherapist for primary or adjunctive treatment.

Due to limited resources, we do not perform drug rehabilitation or detoxification services. Furthermore, the RPTC does not offer intensive psychotherapy and does not have a multi-disciplinary treatment team at this time. Please note that if medications are recommended, patient participants will need to have prescriptions filled at a pharmacy. We cannot provide medications for free; however, we will help qualified individuals apply for drug assistance programs to obtain medications for free or at a reduced cost.

Clinic Fees

Insurance is accepted at RPTC. You may need to call the RPTC and/or your insurance provider to determine if your insurance plan has mental health coverage and if the Emory RPTC can accept your insurance. We also accept self-pay patients. The RPTC no longer offers sliding scale medication management appointments. Fees and accepted insurance carriers are subject to change.
