The ACES Project

The ACES Project (Atlanta Cohort on the Early course of Schizophrenia) is a series of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded studies involving patients hospitalized for a first episode of a primary psychotic disorder.  Our research focuses primarily on the determinants of treatment delay and the effects of cannabis use on first-episode psychosis.  The ACES Project hopes to learn how to improve treatment choices so that we can help people experiencing a first episode of psychosis move toward recovery.

Grady Trauma Project

This project aims to determine the relative contribution of genetic and trauma-related risk factors for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a cross-sectional study of a highly traumatized, low socioeconomic status, minority urban population. Although some level of fear and stress is normal following a traumatic experience, understanding the etiology of PTSD requires knowing why chronic pathological symptoms do not occur in all who experience trauma. Individuals appear to have different vulnerabilities for subsequent response to traumatic stress.
